Seamless gutters in Massillon, Ohio are usually a replacement job, not an upgrade. This is the oldest housing Guttrz works on, and a lot of it still carries steel gutters or sectional gutters that have reached the end. Guttrz installs 5-inch and 6-inch K-style seamless aluminum gutters and new downspouts here, with tear-off and haul-away of the old ones included. The office is at 1196 Doncaster St NW in North Canton, about 10 miles and 20 minutes away. This page is about the Massillon questions. The service itself is laid out on the main seamless gutters page.
Why does gutter replacement come up so often in Massillon?
Because so much of the city was built in one burst, a long time ago. Central Steel lit its first open hearth furnace here in 1915. Between the 1920 and 1930 counts, Massillon grew from 17,428 people to 26,400, a jump of about half in ten years. Those families needed houses, and the bungalows and Foursquares from that decade still line the older streets.
Aluminum gutters did not become the common choice until later. Houses from those years were typically fitted with galvanized steel, and many were later patched with sectional pieces from a home store. Steel rusts. Sectional joints leak.
How can you tell if your gutters are galvanized steel?
Hold a magnet to the gutter. A magnet sticks to steel and falls off aluminum.
Then look for what steel does with age:
- Orange streaks or blisters under the paint. Rust is working from the inside out.
- Pinholes along the bottom. Go out in a steady rain. Drips from the middle of a run, away from any joint, mean the floor of the gutter has rusted through.
- Rusty downspouts. The elbows and the bottom few feet usually go first.
A rust hole can be patched for a season. It cannot be stopped, because the metal around the patch is the same age. Rusted-through steel is the clearest case for replacement. Our guide on whether to repair or replace gutters walks through the other cases.
Should you keep sealing sectional gutter joints or replace the run?
One leaking joint is a repair. A joint every 10 feet that all drip is a replacement. Sectional gutter comes in 10-foot pieces, so a 30-foot bungalow eave has two joints in the middle of it.
Ohio winters work on those joints. Water sits in the lap, freezes, and pries the sealant loose. If only one joint drips and the metal is straight, gutter repair is the right call. If you have resealed the same run more than once, or the pieces have sagged apart at the connectors, a single seamless piece ends the problem.
What can seamless gutters replace on a Massillon, Ohio house, and what can they not?
K-style seamless aluminum replaces any hung K-style gutter and most hung half-round gutters. It does not replace a built-in box gutter.
| What is on the house now | How to spot it | Can Guttrz replace it with seamless aluminum? |
|---|---|---|
| Hung K-style, steel or aluminum, one piece or sectional | Flat back against the board, shaped front like crown molding | Yes. This is the standard job. |
| Hung half-round on brackets or straps | A half pipe hanging below the roof edge | Usually yes, if there is a flat fascia board to mount to. The look changes from round to K-style. |
| Built-in box gutter | No gutter visible from the ground. A lined trough sits inside the cornice or roof edge. | No. Relining or rebuilding a box gutter is specialty work that Guttrz does not do. |
If you have box gutters, you need a roofer or sheet metal shop that works on historic homes. Send a photo of the roof edge with your address and you will get a plain answer.
What about the fascia and rafter tails on a house this old?
The wood decides whether a new gutter stays up. Guttrz hangs gutters on hidden hangers screwed into the fascia, so the fascia has to be solid enough to hold a screw.
On a house that has had a leaking gutter for years, it often is not. Water runs behind the gutter, soaks the board, and rots it from the back. So the fascia is checked twice: what can be seen during the on-site check, and all of it once the old gutter is off. Rotted wood is a separate repair. It is quoted before work continues.
Bungalows add a twist. Many were built with open eaves, where the ends of the rafters show and there is no fascia board at all. A K-style gutter needs a flat surface behind it, so a house like that has to be looked at before anyone promises anything. Christian Schaffner, the owner, does the on-site check and will tell you what he finds.
Where should roof water go on a lot near the Tuscarawas River?
Away from the foundation, and on the low ground beside the river that takes more thought. Massillon sits in the Tuscarawas valley, and the river used to curve right into downtown. A flood control project begun in 1939 and finished in 1951 moved and straightened the channel, moved the railroad tracks, and added three viaducts, including the one that carries Lincoln Way.
That work handles the river. Your gutters handle the roof. One inch of rain on 1,000 square feet of roof is about 620 gallons, and on an old house with a stone or block basement, every gallon that lands by the wall is a problem. A replacement is the time to fix the layout, not only the metal:
- Add a downspout where one long run feeds a single outlet. A common guideline is one for roughly every 30 to 40 feet.
- Move an outlet so it does not empty beside a basement window.
- Size up the downspout. A 3x4-inch downspout moves roughly twice the water of the old 2x3.
One limit: on houses of this age, downspouts often drop into a clay pipe in the ground. Guttrz does not clear or repair underground drain lines. If that pipe is blocked, a drain company has to open it.
Do Massillon bungalows and Cape Cods need 5-inch or 6-inch gutters?
Most need 5-inch. The exceptions are a steep Cape Cod roof, a Foursquare with a tall hip roof, or a valley that pours onto one short gutter. A 6-inch gutter carries roughly 40 percent more water, and sizes can be mixed on one house. The details are in 5-inch vs 6-inch gutters.
What do new gutters cost in Massillon, and how do you get a price?
Guttrz does not publish a per-foot price for seamless gutters. Across Northeast Ohio, 5-inch seamless aluminum is commonly quoted at about $8 to $14 per foot installed, and 6-inch at about $10 to $18. Those are typical market ranges, not Guttrz prices. Our post on seamless gutter cost in Ohio breaks down the line items.
Your Guttrz price comes in writing after a 20-minute on-site check, and it is good for one year. There is no in-home sales presentation. Most homes are done in a day. If the gutters turn out to be sound aluminum that only needs a gutter cleaning in Massillon, you will hear that instead. Once new gutters are up, gutter guards in Massillon can go on the same visit at the normal guard rate.

Questions
Can Guttrz replace the box gutters on my historic Massillon home?
No. A built-in box gutter is a lined trough set into the roof edge, and relining or rebuilding one is specialty work that Guttrz does not do. Look for a roofer or sheet metal shop that works on historic homes. Guttrz installs K-style seamless aluminum gutters that hang on the fascia.
Can rusted steel gutters be patched instead of replaced?
A single small hole can be patched to get through a season. It will not last, because the steel around the patch is the same age and is rusting too. Once you see pinholes along the bottom of a run or rust blisters in several places, replacing that run with aluminum is the lasting fix. Aluminum does not rust.
Will K-style gutters look wrong on a 1920s bungalow?
K-style is the profile on most houses in Massillon today, including many bungalows and Foursquares, so it will not look out of place. It is a different look from half-round, though. If your house has half-round gutters and you want to keep that exact look, tell us up front, because Guttrz forms K-style only.
My house has open rafter tails and no fascia board. Can it get seamless gutters?
It needs a look first. Guttrz hangs gutters on hidden hangers screwed into the fascia, and a K-style gutter needs a flat surface behind it. On a house with open eaves, the on-site check is where you find out whether the job is a fit. Send a photo of the roof edge with your address to speed that up.
Can I replace only the steel gutters and keep the newer aluminum ones?
Yes. Many older Massillon houses have a mix, with original steel on the main roof and newer aluminum on an addition or porch. If the aluminum runs are straight and sound, there is no reason to replace them. The on-site check sorts out which runs need to go.
How far is Guttrz from Massillon?
About 10 miles, or roughly 20 minutes by car. Guttrz is based at 1196 Doncaster St NW in North Canton.
Do new gutters on an old house need gutter guards too?
Not always. Older Massillon lots often have tall maples and oaks over a low roof, and on those a guard saves a lot of ladder trips. Guards can go on new gutters the same visit at $17 per foot on a single story and $19 per foot on a two story, with a $1,200 minimum. If no trees stand near the roof, a cleaning once or twice a year at $150 to $300 may be all you need.
