Richfield is really two places with one name. Richfield Township was settled in 1809 and named for its rich soil. After the Ohio Turnpike, I-77, and I-271 brought truck terminals, residents incorporated the Village of Richfield in 1967 to gain more control over development. The village formally separated from the township in 2003 and counted 3,729 residents in the 2020 census.

Offices, trucking, and shops line Brecksville Road near I-77. Most homes sit west of there, along Broadview Road and quiet side streets off West Streetsboro Road. Just west of I-271 on Route 303, the Richfield Coliseum hosted the Cavaliers from 1974 to 1994. The National Park Service later tore up about 80 acres of its parking lots, and the site is now grassland in Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

What falls on a Richfield roof, and where does it come from?

Cuyahoga Valley National Park runs along the village's eastern border, Furnace Run Metro Park reaches into the northeast corner, the 336-acre Richfield Heritage Preserve sits off Broadview Road, and the village's 28-acre Eastwood Preserve is near the center of town.
