Seamless gutters in Richfield, Ohio
On a hilly Richfield lot, where the new gutters put the water matters as much as the gutters themselves. 5-inch and 6-inch seamless aluminum, downspouts planned for the slope, one firm written price.
Guttrz installs 5-inch and 6-inch K-style seamless aluminum gutters and downspouts in Richfield, Ohio, formed on site, with tear-off and haul-away of the old gutters included. Richfield's ground runs from about 784 to 1,319 feet above sea level, so most houses sit on a slope, and the downspout plan decides whether roof water runs away from a walkout wall or toward it. Seamless gutters in Northeast Ohio are commonly quoted at about $8 to $14 per foot for 5-inch and $10 to $18 for 6-inch, which are market ranges and not Guttrz prices. Your firm price comes in writing after a 20-minute on-site check and is good for one year.
Seamless gutters in Richfield, Ohio have a job that gutters on a flat Canton lot never face: deciding where the water goes once it leaves the roof on a hillside. Guttrz installs 5-inch and 6-inch K-style seamless aluminum gutters and downspouts here, formed on site to the length of each run, with the old gutters torn off and hauled away. Three things decide a gutter replacement in Richfield: the slope under the house, the age of the gutters on it, and the snow that lands on it. What every job includes is on the main seamless gutters page.
Where should new gutters discharge on a sloped Richfield lot?
Downhill from the house, and never at the top of a slope that runs back toward it. Richfield's ground runs from about 784 feet above sea level at its lowest point to about 1,319 feet at its highest, roughly 535 feet of difference inside one small town, and several headwater streams of the Rocky River's East Branch start in the township. Few lots here are flat. A gutter replacement is the one time the downspouts can go where they should have been all along.
The soil does not help. Geologists who studied Richfield Township mapped three layers of glacial till beneath it. Till is dense and drains slowly, so water leaving a downspout sits on the surface and follows the slope, and on a lot that falls toward the house that means toward the foundation. During the on-site check, each downspout gets a decision:
- Uphill side. A downspout here lands water on ground that already drains at the house. It needs an extension, a splash block set to carry water sideways, or a tie into an existing drain line. Sometimes the outlet moves to a corner where the grade falls away.
- Walkout side. Richfield listings regularly advertise walkout lower levels and ravine lots. A walkout wall is below grade on three sides, so one downspout spilling at a corner can show up as a damp lower level a week later. Downspouts on this side run past the patio or retaining wall, not onto it.
- Driveway side. If the driveway climbs or drops to the garage, a downspout emptying onto it sends a sheet of water down the pavement that freezes in January. It should point onto lawn or into a drain.
What are the original gutters on Richfield's older farmhouses?
Often galvanized steel, hung on spikes. Richfield has been settled a long time. West Richfield Cemetery on Broadview Road dates to 1824 and Fairview Cemetery on Brecksville Road to 1845, and county records date some farmhouses along Broadview Road to around 1850. Census Bureau estimates for 2012 to 2016 put about 1 in 7 houses in Richfield Township at 1939 or earlier, with another fifth from the 1950s.
Steel gutters rust from the inside, at the seams and in the low spots where water sits. The face can look fine while the bottom has pinholes. From the ground, look for orange streaks below the seams, a drip line worn in the soil under a gutter that is not overflowing, and runs that look wavy because the metal has thinned. Once steel is rusting through, patches are short-lived and seamless aluminum is the sensible step. The repair or replace guide walks through each sign.
Two cautions on a farmhouse. Deep eaves and fascia boards that were never wrapped mean the fascia is checked once the old gutter is off, and rotted wood is quoted as its own repair before anything is hung. And a few have built-in box gutters, which are part of the roof edge rather than hung from it. Guttrz does not work on built-in box gutters.
Why do long runs and valleys on newer Richfield homes call for 6-inch gutters?
Because a big roof plane puts a lot of water in one place. About a third of the houses in Richfield Township went up between 1990 and 2009, and building continues. Pulte's Briarwood Estates, which opened in the village in 2022, is planned for 130 two-story homes of roughly 2,300 to 4,000 square feet. Custom homes on the wooded lots are often larger still, with steep pitches and rooflines that meet in valleys.
A 5-inch K-style gutter with 2x3 downspouts handles a ranch. A 6-inch gutter carries roughly 40 percent more water and pairs with 3x4 downspouts, which move about twice what a 2x3 does. A steep plane also sheds rain at speed, and a valley aims two planes at one spot on the gutter. The table shows how the three kinds of Richfield houses usually sort out.
| Richfield house | Gutter usually on it now | What usually decides replacement | Size that usually fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1800s to 1930s farmhouse on Broadview or Brecksville Road | Galvanized steel on spikes, sometimes replaced once with aluminum | Rust-through, seams leaking along their length, soft fascia | 5-inch on most, 6-inch under a large rear roof |
| 1950s to 1970s ranch or split-level | Spike-hung aluminum | Spikes backing out, low spots that hold water, crushed runs | 5-inch |
| 1990s to today two-story or custom home on a sloped lot | 5-inch seamless aluminum, often small for the roof | Overflow at valleys in storms, long runs that spill mid-run, downspouts in the wrong places | 6-inch with 3x4 downspouts on the big planes |
A long run should be one piece. The machine on the truck forms a 50-foot run as a single length, so there is no joint mid-run to open when ice loads it. Where one downspout cannot drain a run, the fix is a second downspout at the downhill end, not a bigger gutter alone. The sizing call is explained in 5-inch vs 6-inch gutters.
How do snow and ice at Richfield's elevation load a gutter?
Harder than the Akron-Canton numbers suggest. In the winter of 2006 to 2007, the National Weather Service office in Cleveland logged 93.2 inches of snow from its volunteer observer in Richfield. Akron's observer logged 47.6 inches and Akron-Canton Airport recorded 38.8 inches that same season. Richfield sits on some of the highest ground in Summit County, and air rising over high ground wrings more snow out of a north wind off the lake.
Snow that slides off a steep roof piles into the gutter, and on a north-facing run it does not melt between storms. A gutter full of wet snow weighs several pounds per foot, and ice weighs more. That load pulls on every fastener. A spike driven into old fascia works loose a little more with each freeze and thaw, which is why so many older gutters here lean forward. Guttrz hangs gutters on hidden hangers screwed into the fascia. A screw holds in wood. A smooth spike relies on friction that winter takes away. The runs that face north or sit below a roof plane that dumps snow get the closest look.
None of this prevents an ice dam, which starts with attic heat melting snow that refreezes at the cold eave. New gutters make the melt easier to carry off in a thaw. Attic insulation and air sealing are what stop the dam.
What do seamless gutters cost in Richfield, Ohio?
Guttrz does not publish a per-foot price for gutters. For context, seamless aluminum gutters in Northeast Ohio are commonly quoted at about $8 to $14 per linear foot installed for 5-inch and about $10 to $18 for 6-inch, with downspouts usually a separate line. A typical 150 to 200 foot house commonly lands around $1,500 to $3,500. Those are market ranges, not Guttrz prices.
Two things push a Richfield quote toward the upper end of any range. The walkout side of a house is a story taller than the front, so the downspouts there are longer and the ladder work is higher. And moving outlets or adding extensions adds downspout footage. Both appear as their own lines on the written quote, which comes after a 20-minute on-site check and is good for one year. The seamless gutter cost guide explains each line.
When is a repair enough on a Richfield house?
When the metal is sound and the problem is one spot. Straight aluminum with loose spikes can be rehung, one leaking corner resealed, a run that holds water resloped. Those are gutter repairs, and they cost far less than new gutters. A gutter that only spills under the oaks after a wet fall may just need a gutter cleaning in Richfield. If the gutters are good and the trees are the problem, the Richfield gutter guard page covers that. New gutters can get Leaf Solution guards on the same visit at the normal guard rate.
How does the on-site check work from North Canton?
Guttrz is based at 1196 Doncaster St NW in North Canton, about 35 miles south of Richfield. Send your address with the form on this page or text it to (330) 818-5584, and you hear back within the hour during business hours. Owner Christian Schaffner does the 20-minute check with a ladder. On a Richfield lot that includes walking the grade around the house and noting where each downspout should end, so the quote covers the whole water path and not just the gutter. You do not need to be home. Mention a walkout, a long driveway, or a gate when you text.
Questions
My Richfield house has a walkout basement that gets damp. Will new gutters fix it?
Only if roof water is the cause, which it often is. In the next steady rain, watch the downspouts on the walkout side and the corners above the retaining wall. Water spilling there or pooling on the patio points to the gutters. New seamless gutters with downspouts routed past the walkout wall remove that source. Grading that slopes toward the wall or a failed footer drain is a separate problem, and new gutters will not fix it on their own.
Can a downspout be moved to a different corner when the gutters are replaced?
Yes. Seamless gutters are formed on site, so the outlet is cut wherever it belongs and the run is sloped toward it. On a sloped lot that usually means moving an outlet from the uphill side of the house to a corner where the ground falls away. The change shows up on the quote as downspout footage, since a new location sometimes needs a longer or shorter downspout.
Can new downspouts connect to the buried drain pipes on my Richfield lot?
If the drain line comes to the surface at the downspout, the new downspout is set into it. We do not dig up or clear underground lines. If water backs up out of the pipe during a flush, you are told and shown in the photos, and a drain company with a jetter or camera handles the line. On a lot with a septic system, downspouts should also stay well away from the leach field.
Do I need 6-inch gutters on the whole house or just the back?
Only where the roof calls for it. Many Richfield custom homes have one large rear roof plane facing the ravine and a smaller front roof. The rear can get 6-inch gutters with 3x4 downspouts while the front stays 5-inch. Mixing sizes on one house is normal, and the on-site check measures each roof plane before the quote is written.
Are the steel gutters on an 1800s Richfield farmhouse worth saving?
If the steel is sound, with no rust streaks, pinholes, or soft spots, it can be rehung and resealed. If it is rusting through anywhere, it is close to failing everywhere, and replacement with seamless aluminum makes more sense than patching. Guttrz installs K-style aluminum, which looks right on most farmhouses. Built-in box gutters that are part of the roof edge are a different trade, and Guttrz does not work on those.
Does the extra snow in Richfield mean I need thicker gutters?
Thickness matters less than attachment. Residential aluminum gutter coil is commonly .027 or .032 inch, and .032 is the heavier, more dent-resistant choice, so ask any installer which gauge is on your quote. What keeps a gutter on the house through a Richfield winter is a fastener that holds in the fascia, sound wood behind it, and a gutter that is not already packed with leaves when the snow arrives.
