How to check your gutters from the ground

You can sort most gutter problems into the table above in about ten minutes without a ladder. Pick a dry day and check every side.

Sight down each run. Look along the front lip from one end. It should be straight with a slight fall toward the downspout. A dip is a sag or slope problem. A wave means several spikes have let go.
Look for daylight behind the gutter. A gap between the gutter and the fascia means it has tipped forward and water runs behind it.
Look for nail heads. Spike and ferrule gutters show a row of round nail heads along the front. Any that stick out farther than the rest are backing out.
Read the ground. Washed-out mulch or a splash line on the siding shows where water pours over.
Run a hose. Set a garden hose in the gutter at the end farthest from the downspout and let it run two minutes. A corner that drips while the hose runs needs sealant. A run that fills before water reaches the outlet needs reslope.
Press the fascia. If you can safely reach it, push a screwdriver tip into the fascia near the worst spot. If it sinks in, the wood is rotted.

Why gutter guards must never go on a failing gutter

A gutter guard fastens to the front lip and sits over the run. It cannot fix a sag, a leak, or a loose hanger underneath it. A guard on a bad gutter hides the problem and makes the next repair harder, because the mesh has to come off first. That is why Guttrz repairs the gutter before any guard goes on.

What Guttrz repairs, and how each fix is done

Leaking gutter corner and end cap resealing

Corners are the weak point of every gutter. Two pieces of aluminum meet at an angle, and only sealant keeps the joint dry. It hardens and cracks after enough summers and winters. The fix is to scrape out all the old sealant, scrub the joint clean, dry it, and lay a fresh bead of gutter-grade sealant inside the seam and around the outside of the miter. Sealant over old sealant or dirt fails in a season.

Gutter reslope for runs that hold water

A gutter should fall toward its downspout, about a quarter inch for every ten feet. When a run settles flat, water sits, seeps through seams, and freezes in winter. Resloping means loosening the hangers, lifting the high end to the right line, and refastening.

Hidden hangers to replace loose spikes

Hidden hangers sit inside the gutter, hook under the front lip, and drive a screw through the back of the gutter into the fascia. A screw grips wood far better than a smooth spike, and the hanger is invisible from the ground. We set them about every 24 inches, closer where snow load is heavy. Downspout flush

A clogged downspout overflows the gutter at the outlet no matter how clean the run is. We flush each one from the top until it runs clear at the bottom.

Why gutters fail this way in Northeast Ohio

Winters here do not freeze once and stay frozen. Temperatures cross 32 degrees again and again from November into March. Every crossing lets water in a nail hole or a sealant crack expand, then relax. Spikes walk out a hair at a time.

Spring maple helicopter seeds mat together, hold water for days, and pile up at corners and outlets, exactly where sealant is under the most strain. October and November add oak and maple leaves on top.

Then there is the housing stock. Many homes in North Canton, Canton, and the surrounding townships were built from the 1960s through the 1990s, when spike and ferrule was the standard way to hang a gutter. Water backing up from the ground: drain contractor

Can a leaking gutter corner be fixed without replacing the gutter?

Yes, in most cases. A corner leaks because the sealant in the miter has cracked or separated, not because the aluminum has failed. The fix is to remove all the old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and apply fresh gutter-grade sealant inside and out. If the corner piece itself is split or rusted, that one piece is replaced, not the whole gutter.

Why does my gutter leak at the corner only when it rains hard?

The sealant has a small crack that water reaches only when the gutter fills above the seam. In light rain, water stays below the crack and drains. In a heavy summer storm the corner fills, and water finds the gap. It usually means the seal is on its way out and the corner may also be slightly low. Resealing fixes it, and a reslope may be needed if water sits in that corner after rain.

Should I fix or replace 30-year-old gutters?

Look at the metal, not the age. Aluminum gutters from the 1990s are often straight and sound while their spikes and sealant have failed. Those gutters get rehung on hidden hangers and resealed, and they keep working. Replace them if you see rust holes, seams split along their length, sections crushed or bent, or repeated sags after a proper rehang. If the fascia behind them is rotted, replace the wood first, whatever you decide about the gutter.

Can I put gutter guards on gutters that are sagging or leaking?

Not until they are fixed. A guard fastens to the gutter lip and sits over the run, so it cannot correct a sag, a bad slope, or a leaking corner underneath it. Is a gutter pulling away from the house an emergency?
