Do gutter guards cause ice dams?
No. Ice dams start in your attic, not your gutters. Here is what causes them in Northeast Ohio, how each type of guard handles snow and ice, and what to fix first.
No, gutter guards do not cause ice dams. Ice dams form when heat leaking into your attic melts snow on the upper roof and the water refreezes at the cold eave. Around Akron-Canton the low hits freezing about 120 days a year but the high stays below freezing on only about 40, so melt-and-refreeze days are common. A guard can show more icicles at its edge, but the real fix is attic air sealing, insulation, and ventilation.
Do gutter guards cause ice dams, or is it your attic?
Gutter guards do not cause ice dams. An ice dam forms on the roof itself, when heat from your house melts snow on the upper roof and the water refreezes at the cold edge. The gutter hangs below that edge. A roof with no gutters at all can still grow an ice dam.
Three things have to line up: snow on the roof, an upper roof surface above 32 degrees, and a lower edge below 32. Heat leaking into the attic warms the roof deck over the house. The eave sticks out past the wall, so nothing warms it. Meltwater runs down, hits that cold strip, and freezes.
Once the ridge of ice gets tall enough, water pools behind it. Shingles shed running water, but they cannot hold back a puddle. Trapped water backs up under them and leaks into the soffit, walls, and ceilings. The gutter is where you see the ice. The attic is where it starts.
Why Northeast Ohio is ice dam country: the freeze-thaw numbers
Ice dams need freeze-thaw swings more than they need deep snow, and the Akron-Canton area gets plenty of both. Based on NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for the Akron-Canton Airport station:
- Average seasonal snowfall is about 47 inches. January averages about 13 inches and February about 12.
- The low temperature reaches 32 degrees or colder on about 120 days a year.
- The high stays at or below 32 on only about 40 days a year.
- January's normal high is about 36 degrees and its normal low is about 20.
Put those together and you get roughly 80 days a year when the temperature crosses the freezing mark. That is the ice dam pattern: a sunny 36-degree afternoon melts snow on a warm roof, and a 20-degree night locks it in place at the eave.
Lake-effect snow adds to the load in some towns. Local forecasters place the primary snow belt mainly northeast of the Guttrz service area, in Geauga, Lake, Ashtabula, and eastern Cuyahoga counties, where some spots can top 100 inches a season. Canton, North Canton, and Green sit well south of it. Northern towns like Hudson, Twinsburg, and Aurora are closer to the lake-effect bands and can pick up more snow during a lake-effect event.
How do gutter guards handle snow and ice?
Gutter guards in winter mostly change where snow and ice sit. With a solid guard, snow stays on top instead of packing into the trough. That keeps weight off your hangers, but icicles at the front edge can be more visible. Weak guards and guards with big openings behave worse.

Micro-mesh guards in snow and ice
Fine stainless mesh lets water in across thousands of tiny openings. In a hard freeze, meltwater running off the roof can glaze the mesh. When that happens, water sheets over the front lip and forms icicles. That water is dripping off the house instead of freezing inside the trough, and the skin usually clears on the first sunny day above freezing. What matters most is a rigid frame, so heavy wet snow cannot push the mesh down into the gutter. Screens in snow and ice
Screen openings are big enough for slush to drop through and freeze inside the gutter, so you get the weight of an open gutter plus a screen frozen to the ice. Plastic snap-in screens turn brittle and crack when a roof rake catches them. Perforated aluminum holds up better but bends if you pry ice off it.
Reverse curve and helmet-style guards in snow and ice
Water follows a curved nose into a narrow slot. That works well in rain. In winter, the nose ices over first, and meltwater then shoots past the slot and over the front. The slot can freeze shut, and the solid hood lets snow slide off in sheets onto steps. Know that tradeoff if your front door sits under an eave.
Icicles on gutters: when should you worry?
Icicles on gutters are not an ice dam by themselves. They mean water is reaching the edge and freezing as it drips. Worry when you see signs that water is backing up on the roof or getting inside. A look from the ground on a cold morning tells you most of what you need.
- A thick ridge of ice along the roof edge with snow or slush piled behind it.
- Icicles hanging from the soffit or siding, behind the gutter instead of off its front edge.
- Water stains or peeling paint on ceilings or walls near exterior walls.
- Icicles only on one stretch of roof, often above a bathroom, kitchen, or a room with recessed lights. That points to one big heat leak.
How much weight can snow and ice put on your gutters?
Gutter guards and snow load come up a lot, so here is the math. Ice weighs about 57 pounds per cubic foot. A standard 5-inch K-style gutter packed solid with ice holds roughly 5 pounds per foot. A 6-inch gutter holds roughly 8. On a 40-foot run of 5-inch gutter, that is about 200 pounds hanging from the hangers, before you count the icicles. That is a big reason gutters pull away from the house after a hard winter. A strong guard that keeps snow out of the trough keeps most of that weight off the hangers.
What should you check in your attic to stop ice dams?
Most ice dams come from warm air leaking into the attic, thin insulation, or blocked vents. You can check all three yourself with a flashlight and a tape measure. Seal air leaks first, add insulation second, and make sure air can move from the soffits to the ridge. Here is the order to check things.
- Read your roof after a light snow. The next cold morning, look at the roof from the street. Bare stripes or melted patches over the living space, while the eaves and a detached garage still hold snow, mean heat is escaping.
- Look for air leaks. In the attic, check around the hatch or pull-down stairs, recessed light cans, bath fan housings, and holes for pipes and wires. Gray or dark streaks on fiberglass insulation show where house air has been blowing through it. Seal gaps with foam or caulk, using fire-rated materials around chimneys and flues.
- Measure the insulation. ENERGY STAR recommends about R49 or more in attics for Ohio's climate. With most loose-fill insulation that means well over a foot of depth. If you can see the tops of your ceiling joists, you almost certainly have too little.
- Follow every fan duct. Bathroom and kitchen fans must vent outdoors, not into the attic. Warm, wet air in the attic melts snow from below.
- Check the soffit vents. Insulation pushed into the eaves can block the vents. Foam or cardboard baffles keep an air channel open from the soffit up toward the ridge.
- Look for frost. On a very cold day, frost on nail tips or on the underside of the roof deck means moist house air is getting in.
Story-and-a-half homes with sloped ceilings and knee walls are the hardest to fix. If yours dams every year, a home energy audit with a blower door test is often worth it before spending money anywhere else.
Does ice and water shield stop ice dams?
Ice and water shield does not stop an ice dam from forming. It stops the water trapped behind a dam from leaking into the house. It is a sticky rubberized membrane laid on the roof deck under the shingles along the eaves.
The Residential Code of Ohio, section R905.1.2, calls for an ice barrier in areas with a history of ice forming along the eaves. It must run from the lowest roof edge to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line. Your local building department decides where it applies. Ask for it in writing on your next roof quote. If a new roof is planned in the next year or two, do the roof first and add guards after.
Are heated gutter guards or heat cable worth it?
Heat is a patch for a heat problem. It makes sense for one chronic spot you cannot fix in the attic, such as a valley that dumps onto a porch roof or a downspout that freezes every January. It is a poor fix for a whole roof that dams because the attic leaks heat.
Heat cable
Roof heat cable clips to the shingles in a zigzag along the edge, then runs through the gutter and down the downspout. That last part matters. If the downspout stays frozen, meltwater just refreezes lower down. Self-regulating cable puts out more heat as it gets colder. It needs a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet and should be installed exactly as the maker says. Some cold-climate extension guides discourage it because it uses power every winter and treats the symptom, not the cause.
Heated gutter guards
Heated gutter guards build a heating element into or under the cover. They keep the surface clear so meltwater gets into the gutter instead of forming icicles. They cost more up front and need power. If you may add heat cable later, say so before any guard install so the route can be planned.
What not to do about ice dams and icicles
Sharp tools, high-pressure water, and salt turn an ice dam into a roof repair. Work from the ground. University extension guides suggest pulling snow off the lower roof and, on a mild day, using a garden hose with tap water to cut drain channels through the dam.
- Do not chip ice with a hammer, hatchet, or ice pick. You will crack shingles, dent the gutter, and tear any mesh.
- Do not pressure wash ice or the roof. It drives water up under shingles, strips granules, and the water refreezes overnight.
- Do not throw rock salt on the roof. It kills the shrubs below and corrodes metal gutters and flashing. If you use a melt product, calcium chloride in a nylon stocking laid across the dam is the common method. Read the label first.
- Do not rake down to bare shingles. Use a roof rake from the ground, clear the first few feet above the edge, and leave an inch or two of snow so you do not scrape granules.
- Do not hang on icicles or knock them loose from a ladder leaned on the gutter. A loaded gutter can pull free.
- Do not climb an icy roof. If water is coming inside, call a roofer or ice dam steaming service.
Should you add gutter guards before winter in Ohio?
If oak and maple leaves fill your gutters in October and November, guards help more in winter than they hurt. A gutter packed with wet leaves going into December freezes into a heavy ice log. Can an ice dam removal company steam ice off gutter guards?
Yes, but it takes longer. Steamers melt ice through the mesh or around the guard instead of breaking chunks loose, which is the right way to do it anyway. Ask them not to pry on the guard or the gutter lip.
Does the height of the gutter matter for ice dams?
It can. Gutters are usually hung so the front edge sits a little below the plane of the roof, so sliding snow and ice clear it. A gutter hung too high catches sliding snow and ice and takes a beating each winter. Height does not cause dams, but it affects how much ice the gutter holds.
When is ice dam season in Northeast Ohio?
Ice dams around Akron and Canton show up mostly from December through early March. January and February bring the most snow, about 13 and 12 inches on average at the Akron-Canton Airport, along with the most days that freeze at night and thaw in the afternoon.
Can gutter guards help prevent ice dams at all?
