What do we check on spike-hung gutters?
Many older gutters hang on long spikes driven through the front lip into the fascia board. Spikes work loose over the years, and a gutter full of wet leaves pulls on them harder. While the gutter is empty and we are at eye level with it, we look at four things:
- Spike heads. A head that sits proud of the gutter face has backed out of the wood.
- The gap at the back. Daylight between the gutter and the fascia means water can run behind it.
- Pitch. After the flush, water should drain to the downspout. A puddle left in the middle of a run means it has sagged.
- Corners and end caps. Old sealant cracks, and a slow drip shows as a stain below the joint.
