When should you clean gutters in Northeast Ohio?
Twice a year, timed to the trees. In Stark, Summit and Medina counties the heavy leaf drop runs from late October through mid November, and oaks hold on longest. The spring cleaning comes after the maple helicopters and the cottonwood fluff are down, usually late May into June. Which homes need gutter cleaning most?
Any home with a tree taller than its roof. A few house types in this part of Ohio fill faster than the rest, and they are the ones a gutter cleaning service here sees most.
Two-story colonials under mature maples and oaks
The older streets of Canton, North Canton, Akron and Hudson have shade trees that top the roofline by twenty feet. The gutter sits at twenty feet or more, so nobody looks in it, and oaks keep dropping into December. Acorns and twigs collect in the corners, and the weight of wet leaves bends hangers. These homes need a fall cleaning after the oaks are bare, and often a spring one too.
Ranches with pine needles
White pine and spruce needles slide past most screens and pack downspout elbows like felt. A single-story ranch in Green, Uniontown or Jackson Township with pines along the drive can have a clear-looking gutter and a downspout that is solid for three feet. What drives the price of gutter cleaning?
Four things: the number of stories, the length of gutter, how packed the gutters are, and whether guards are on. Height matters most. A two-story colonial means a longer ladder, more moves and slower work than a ranch. Length matters next, because most homes in Stark and Summit counties carry somewhere between 120 and 260 feet of gutter, and every corner is another ladder move. Gutters skipped for two or three years hold a wet, heavy mat with seedlings growing in it, and the downspouts are usually packed, so that job takes longer than a twice-a-year cleaning. Guards that have to come off and go back on add time.
