Downspout cleaning and flushing
Most gutters that overflow at one spot have a clogged downspout, not a full gutter. We clear the outlet and elbows, flush from the top until water runs clear, and confirm it at the bottom.
Downspout cleaning means clearing the outlet in the gutter, taking apart or snaking the elbows where needed, flushing the pipe with a hose from the top until water runs clear, and confirming the flow at the bottom. Guttrz includes it in every gutter cleaning in Canton, North Canton and the rest of Stark, Summit and Medina counties, and comes out for a downspout-only visit quoted from your address and a photo. We flush underground lines from the top and tell you what we find, but a collapsed or root-filled buried line is a job for a drain company.
Downspout cleaning is the part of a gutter cleaning most overflow problems come back to. A gutter can look clean and still pour over the edge because the outlet, an elbow, or the pipe is packed. Guttrz clears and flushes every downspout in every gutter cleaning in Canton, and comes out for a clogged downspout on its own. Here is how to tell, where the clog sits, how we clear it, and where our work stops underground.
What are the signs a downspout is clogged?
A clogged downspout shows up as water going over the gutter edge at one spot, usually near the downspout, while the rest of the run looks fine. In steady rain, nothing comes out the bottom, or only a trickle. Some downspouts gurgle as trapped air works past the blockage. In winter, a clogged downspout freezes into a solid column of ice. Here is how to check from the ground during a rain.
- Overflow at one spot. If water sheets over the front edge in one place near a downspout, the downspout is the suspect, not the whole gutter. A gutter that spills along its whole length is more likely full or out of slope, covered in why are my gutters overflowing.
- Nothing at the bottom. Watch the splash block while it rains. A dribble in steady rain means the water is stuck above.
- Gurgle or thump. Water pooling on a clog pushes air through in bursts.
- Ice column in winter. A downspout frozen solid in January was holding water in December. Dry downspouts do not fill with ice.
Where do downspouts clog?
Downspouts clog at five points: the outlet where the gutter drops into the pipe, the top elbow under the roof edge, the bottom elbow near the ground, the strainer if one is fitted, and the underground line where the downspout enters buried pipe. The outlet and the top elbow are the most common.

| Where the clog sits | What you see | What clears it |
|---|---|---|
| Outlet (the hole in the gutter floor) | Gutter overflows right at the downspout, gutter above holds water | Cleared by hand from the gutter, then flushed |
| Top elbow | Overflow at the downspout, gurgling, water seeping at the elbow seam | Elbow taken apart or snaked, flushed from the top |
| Straight pipe | Slow trickle at the bottom, pipe sounds dull when tapped | Hose from the top until water runs clear, snaked if needed |
| Bottom elbow | Water backs up and spits out at the bottom seam, grit piles on the splash block | Elbow pulled and emptied, then reattached |
| Strainer | Gutter overflows at the outlet even though the pipe is clear | Strainer lifted and cleared, or removed if it causes repeat clogs |
| Underground line | Water backs up out of the bottom of the downspout at the ground | Flushed from the top and checked at the outlet; a blocked line goes to a drain company |
The outlet clogs first because it is the low point of the run. Once a mat of leaves and grit forms over the hole, the gutter fills and roof water lands at the foundation, which is how a wet basement starts. The top elbow is second because it is the first bend. Twigs and acorns that fit through the outlet turn sideways and wedge, and leaves pile behind them.
How does Guttrz clear and flush a downspout?
We clear the outlet by hand from the gutter, take apart or snake the elbows where needed, run a hose from the top until water runs clear, clear any strainers, and confirm the flow at the bottom. Downspout clearing and flushing is included in every Guttrz gutter cleaning, not an add-on.
- Outlet first. With the gutter cleaned out, the outlet is scooped clear by hand.
- Elbows checked. If a hose at the top does not come through in a few seconds, the top elbow is pulled and emptied, or snaked if it is riveted. The bottom elbow is handled the same way.
- Hose from the top. Water runs into the outlet until it comes out the bottom clear and fast. Cloudy water means grit is still moving.
- Strainers. Outlet strainers are lifted, cleared and put back. If one causes repeat clogs, we ask before pulling it.
- Confirmed at the bottom. We watch the bottom elbow or the drain connection for full flow. If water backs up at the ground, the problem is below grade and we tell you.

On our fall 2026 cleanings in Canton, Massillon and North Canton, packed downspout elbows and plugged outlets were the common finding, and much of the work was flushing downspouts and clearing elbows rather than scooping gutters. More on those visits is on the North Canton and Massillon cleaning pages.
Before and after photos go to you the same day, with a note on anything else we find, such as a loose hanger or a split elbow. Those fall under gutter repair and are quoted separately.
Do you clear underground downspout drains?
Partly. Many homes run their downspouts into a buried line that goes to the street, a pop-up emitter in the lawn, or a dry well. Guttrz flushes that line from the top with a hose, checks the outlet or pop-up to see if water arrives, and shows you what we find with a photo. We do not excavate, jet, or run a camera through buried pipe. A collapsed or root-filled line is a job for a drain company, and we say so instead of guessing.
If water comes out at the curb or the pop-up within a minute or so, the line is open. If it backs up and spills at the bottom of the downspout, the line is blocked below. A hose can push a soft plug of leaves through a short line. It cannot move roots, crushed pipe, or silt. Those need a jetter or a camera.
If a closed system backs up, pull the downspout off the drain adapter and fit a temporary extension so roof water runs four to six feet from the foundation until the line is fixed. Do not leave a backed-up line connected through a freeze; the standing water turns to ice and can split the fitting at the base. Once the drain company is done, reconnect, and we confirm the flow on your next cleaning.
Does a 3x4 downspout move more water than a 2x3?
Yes, about twice as much. A 2x3 inch downspout has a cross-section of about 6 square inches and a 3x4 has about 12. Industry sizing guides credit a 2x3 with about 600 square feet of roof and a 3x4 with about 1,200. The larger pipe also clogs less, because twigs and seed clusters pass through instead of wedging.
A bigger downspout is not always the right fix. A common guideline is one downspout for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter. On a 50 foot run with one outlet at the end, the far end fills before the outlet can take it, and a second downspout does more than a wider pipe because it halves the distance water travels. A bigger downspout wins when the run is short, the roof above it is large or steep, and the gutter floods at the outlet in heavy rain.
Going to 3x4 means a larger outlet, new elbows and new pipe. Adding or upsizing a downspout falls under our seamless gutter work and is quoted after the on-site check. If the downspout clogs because the gutter fills with leaves every fall, gutter guards stop the debris before it reaches the outlet, and the flush is included with every guard install.
Why do downspouts clog so often in Northeast Ohio?
Downspouts in Stark, Summit and Medina counties clog because of the trees, the roofs and the weather. Oaks and maples drop their leaves from late October to mid November, acorns and twigs pack elbows, shingle grit from older roofs settles at the outlet, and freeze-thaw from November to March turns a wet clog into an ice column.
Oak and maple leaf drop
Maple leaves go limp when wet and drape over the outlet. Oak leaves curl, catch at the elbow and hold other debris behind them. A cleaning after mid November, once the drop is done, is the one that clears the downspouts for winter.
Acorns and twigs under oaks
An acorn fits through a 2x3 outlet and turns sideways in the elbow. Two or three with twigs behind make a plug a hose will not move. Under mature oaks, we expect to take elbows apart.
Shingle grit from older roofs
Asphalt shingles shed granules faster as they age, and the grit settles in the bottom elbow. Mixed with wet leaves it becomes the black sludge in the photo above.
Freeze and thaw from November to March
A downspout holding water above a clog freezes from the bottom up. Each thaw adds water, each freeze locks it in, and by January the pipe can be a solid column of ice that splits elbows at the seams. The fix is to clear the clog in fall so the pipe is dry when the cold comes. Do not pour hot water or salt down a frozen downspout.
What does downspout cleaning cost?
With a Guttrz gutter cleaning, downspout clearing and flushing is included, so there is no separate downspout line on the price. A downspout-only visit, where the gutters are fine and a downspout is plugged, is quoted from your address and a photo of the problem spot, usually within the hour during business hours. What moves the price of a full cleaning is on the gutter cleaning cost page. Elbows that have to be pulled take longer than a pipe that flushes clear, and the price reflects that.
To get a price, use the form on this page, the quote form, or text your address and a photo of the overflow spot to (330) 818-5584. If the whole gutter needs clearing, start with gutter cleaning.
Questions
Can you unclog a downspout without taking it apart?
Often, yes. If the clog is a soft mat of leaves at the outlet or a loose plug in the straight pipe, clearing the outlet by hand and running a hose from the top pushes it through. A hard plug of acorns, twigs and grit in an elbow usually does not move with water alone. Then the elbow comes off, the fasteners or rivets are removed, and it is emptied and put back. A riveted elbow can sometimes be cleared with a drain snake from the top instead.
Do you clear underground downspout drains?
We flush them from the top with a hose, check whether water arrives at the street outlet or pop-up emitter, and show you what we find with a photo. That can clear a soft plug in a short line. We do not dig, jet, or run a camera through buried pipe. If the line is collapsed, full of roots or silted up, that is a job for a drain company, and we will tell you so instead of guessing.
Why does my downspout freeze?
A downspout freezes because it is holding water, and it holds water because something below is slowing it down. A clear downspout drains and is dry within minutes of the rain stopping. A partly clogged one keeps a column of water above the clog, and in Northeast Ohio that column freezes from late November on. Each thaw adds water on top and each freeze locks it in. Clearing the clog in fall is the fix. Heat tape treats the symptom, not the cause.
Is downspout flushing included in gutter cleaning?
Yes. Every Guttrz gutter cleaning includes clearing every outlet, pulling or snaking elbows where needed, flushing each downspout with a hose until the water runs clear, and confirming the flow at the bottom. It is part of the job, not an add-on. Before and after photos go to you the same day.
Do I need a bigger downspout?
Maybe. A 3x4 downspout moves about twice the water of a 2x3 and clogs less because twigs and seed clusters pass through it. But if a long run has one outlet at the far end, a second downspout helps more than a bigger one, because it halves how far water travels in the gutter. Upsizing means a larger outlet, new elbows and new pipe, so it is usually done with a seamless gutter install or when a downspout is added. We look at the run and the roof above it on the on-site check and quote it there.
Do you serve Akron and Medina?
Yes. Guttrz serves Stark, Summit and Medina counties, including Canton, North Canton, Akron, Green, Jackson Township, Hudson, Stow, Medina and Wadsworth. Send your address and a photo of the overflow spot and we send a price by text, usually within the hour during business hours.
How often should downspouts be cleaned in Ohio?
At least once a year, after the oak and maple leaves finish dropping in mid November, so the pipe is clear and dry before the freeze. Homes under mature oaks or with older shingle roofs often need a second check in spring after the maple seeds. If you have gutter guards, the outlets stay clear of leaves and the flush is a quick confirmation rather than a cleanout.
Can a clogged downspout cause a wet basement?
Yes. A clogged downspout sends the roof water from that whole run over the gutter edge, where it lands in a strip along the foundation instead of being carried away. A two-story roof section can put hundreds of gallons there in one storm. Water pooling against the foundation finds cracks and seeps into the basement. Clearing the downspout and extending it four to six feet from the house fixes the cause.
