Seamless gutters in North Canton, Ohio

Guttrz is a North Canton company. Here is how to tell whether the gutters on a 50-to-70-year-old house here need new hangers or need replacing.

Guttrz installs 5-inch and 6-inch K-style seamless aluminum gutters in North Canton, Ohio from its office at 1196 Doncaster St NW. Most North Canton houses went up between 1950 and 1970, when the population grew from 4,032 to 15,228, and many still have spike-hung gutters. Straight aluminum with loose spikes can be re-hung. Rusting steel, leaking sectional joints and creased runs should be replaced. Most ranches here do fine with 5-inch, with 6-inch worth pricing under valleys and large two-story roof planes. Your firm price comes in writing after a 20-minute on-site check.

Seamless gutters in North Canton, Ohio usually come up for one reason: the house is 50 to 70 years old and the gutters are tired. Guttrz is based here, at 1196 Doncaster St NW, and installs 5-inch and 6-inch K-style seamless aluminum gutters and downspouts. This page is for the owner of a North Canton ranch, split-level or colonial deciding whether to re-hang the old gutters or replace them. What the service includes on every job is on our main seamless gutters page.

Why are so many North Canton gutters the same age?

Because most of the town was built in about twenty years. The census counted 4,032 people in North Canton in 1950, 7,727 in 1960 and 15,228 in 1970. The population nearly doubled twice in a row, and the ranches and two-story colonials went up with it.

Gutters from those years were hung with spikes: long nails driven through the front of the gutter, through a metal sleeve, and into the fascia board. Early ones were often galvanized steel. Later ones, and most replacements, were aluminum. On gutter cleanings in North Canton in fall 2026 we found spike-hung gutters on the older homes, along with standing water and shingle grit in the low spots. On a house this age the question is not whether the gutters are old. It is whether the metal is still good.

Are 50-year-old gutters worth re-hanging, or is it time to replace them?

Re-hang them if the metal is aluminum, straight and free of splits. Replace them if they are rusting steel, sectional with many leaking joints, creased, or still sagging after a proper rehang. The fastener is the cheap part of a gutter. When only the spikes have failed, a rehang on hidden hangers is a repair, not a replacement.

Start with a kitchen magnet on a downspout or the gutter face. If it sticks, the gutter is steel, and any rust you see will spread. If it does not stick, it is aluminum, which does not rust. Then walk the house with this table.

A mixed answer is common: one new run in front, new hangers in back. Our gutter repair page explains how a rehang is quoted, and the longer checklist is in repair or replace gutters.

What does the fascia on a 1950s to 1970s house look like once the gutter is off?

Usually better than owners fear, with bad spots in predictable places. Fascia on houses of this age is commonly a pine board nailed to the rafter ends, painted or wrapped in aluminum during a later siding job. Most of its length stays dry. The trouble shows up where water ran behind the gutter for years:

  • Corners and ends. Leaking miters and end caps drip on the same six inches of board for decades.
  • Behind the low spot. Where a run sagged and held water, the back edge of the gutter kept the wood wet.
  • Old spike holes. A spike that worked loose leaves a hole wider than the nail. Water follows it into the board and the rafter end behind it.
  • Under aluminum wrap. Wrap hides the wood. A board can look perfect from the yard and be soft underneath.

The test is simple: press a screwdriver into the board. Sound wood resists. Soft wood lets the tip sink in, and a hanger screw holds only as well as the board it bites into.

On a Guttrz job the fascia is checked once the old gutter is off. Rotted wood is a separate repair, quoted before work continues. Sound fascia with old spike holes is fine, since hidden hangers screw into fresh wood between them.

Does a typical North Canton roof need 5-inch or 6-inch gutters?

Most ranches here do well with 5-inch. A single-story ranch has a low, simple roof, and each gutter catches a modest strip of it. A 6-inch gutter carries roughly 40 percent more water, and it earns its cost on specific runs: under a roof valley, below a large or steep two-story roof plane, or on a long run with one downspout.

North Canton rain can test the smaller size. On May 14, 2022, parts of the city took 3 to 4 inches of rain within an hour, according to the Canton Repository, with North Main Street and Hillcrest Avenue among the harder-hit areas. No gutter keeps up with a storm like that. But ordinary summer downpours show which runs are marginal. If a clean gutter pours over at the same inside corner every time, the roof is sending that corner more water than the trough or the downspout can take.

Three house types cover most streets in town:

  • Ranch with a plain gable or hip roof. 5-inch with 2x3-inch downspouts.
  • Split-level or L-shaped ranch. 5-inch, with 6-inch under a valley.
  • Two-story colonial with an attached garage. Often 5-inch up top. Price 6-inch with 3x4-inch downspouts where an upper downspout empties onto the garage or porch roof.

Often the downspout is the real limit. A 3x4-inch downspout moves roughly twice the water of a 2x3, and sizes can be mixed on one house. The full comparison is in 5-inch vs 6-inch gutters.

What do seamless gutters cost in North Canton, Ohio?

Guttrz does not publish a per-foot gutter price. Your firm price comes in writing after a 20-minute on-site check and is good for one year. For context, seamless aluminum gutters in Northeast Ohio are commonly quoted at about $8 to $14 per foot for 5-inch and $10 to $18 per foot for 6-inch. Those are market ranges, not Guttrz prices.

On a ranch with 140 feet of gutter, the typical market range for 5-inch works out to 140 x $8 to 140 x $14, or $1,120 to $1,960 for the gutter alone. Downspouts are usually a separate line. Tear-off and haul-away of the old gutters and downspouts is included in every Guttrz gutter job. The line items are explained in our guide to seamless gutter cost in Ohio.

How does a gutter replacement work when the company is in town?

Every North Canton address is a short drive from Doncaster Street. Owner Christian Schaffner sets a ladder, measures each run, tries the fascia he can reach, and looks at the roof above each gutter. You get one written price that lists gutters and downspouts, with no in-home sales presentation.

On install day the old gutters come down, the fascia is checked, and each new gutter is formed at the curb and hung on hidden hangers. Most homes are done in a day. Any problem with the install that you report is fixed within 30 days at no charge, and warranty terms are written on your quote.

If trees hang over the roof, new gutters can get guards on the same visit at $17 per foot on one story or $19 on two, as priced on our North Canton gutter guard page. If the metal turns out to be sound and only the downspouts are plugged, a North Canton gutter cleaning at $150 to $300 may be all you need.

Questions

How do I know if my North Canton gutters are steel or aluminum?

Hold a magnet to the gutter face or a downspout. A magnet sticks to galvanized steel and does not stick to aluminum. Steel was common on houses built here in the 1950s, and once its coating wears through it rusts from the inside. Aluminum does not rust, so an aluminum gutter of the same age may only need new hangers.

Can new seamless gutters go on the original fascia of a 1960s house?

Yes, if the board is solid. Old spike holes do not rule it out, because hidden hangers are screwed into fresh wood between them. The fascia is checked once the old gutter is off. If a section is soft, that repair is quoted before work continues.

My fascia is wrapped in aluminum. Can you tell if the wood under it is rotted?

Not fully until the gutter is off. From a ladder, clues include wrap that is stained, bulged or loose, and a board that gives when pressed. The real check happens on install day with the gutter down. Any rotted wood found then is quoted as a separate repair before anything new is hung.

Should I replace the gutters on only the front of my ranch?

You can. Each seamless run is made to length on site, so one side of a house can be replaced while the rest stays. On many older North Canton homes the runs have aged differently, and the sound ones may only need to be re-hung on hidden hangers.

Do I need 6-inch gutters on a two-story colonial in North Canton?

Not always. Many colonials here work with 5-inch on the main roof. A 6-inch gutter with 3x4-inch downspouts is worth pricing where a valley drains into one corner, or where an upper downspout empties onto a garage or porch roof and loads the lower gutter.
