Seamless gutters in Hudson, Ohio

Sized run by run for two-story colonials with long eaves and roof valleys, and a straight answer on what K-style can replace on an older house near the Green. One firm written price after a 20-minute check.

Guttrz installs 5-inch and 6-inch K-style seamless aluminum gutters and new downspouts in Hudson, Ohio, formed on site, with tear-off and haul-away of the old gutters included. About two thirds of Hudson homes date from 1970 to 1999, and the two-story colonials from those years often need 6-inch gutters with 3x4 downspouts on the back run and under roof valleys, with 5-inch elsewhere. Half-round gutters on a flat fascia can usually be replaced with K-style; built-in cornice gutters on historic homes cannot, and Guttrz does not work on them. Seamless gutters are commonly quoted at about $8 to $14 per foot for 5-inch in Northeast Ohio, a market range and not a Guttrz price. Your firm price comes in writing after a 20-minute on-site check.

Seamless gutters in Hudson, Ohio are mostly a sizing job. About two thirds of Hudson's houses went up between 1970 and 1999, and many are two-story colonials with long eaves, several inside corners, and roof valleys that aim a lot of water at one short stretch of gutter. Guttrz installs 5-inch and 6-inch K-style seamless aluminum gutters and new downspouts in Hudson, formed on site to the length of each run, with tear-off and haul-away of the old gutters included. This page covers when a Hudson colonial needs 6-inch gutters and 3x4 downspouts, what K-style can and cannot replace on an older house near the Green, color matching on 30-year-old trim, and what to ask the city if your home is in the historic district. Details that apply everywhere are on the main seamless gutters page.

Why do Hudson's two-story colonials put so much water in one gutter?

Because the roofs are big and broken up. Census figures for Hudson from the 2012 to 2016 American Community Survey count 1,663 homes built in the 1970s, 1,781 in the 1980s and 1,852 in the 1990s, out of about 8,000 housing units, and the median Hudson house dates to 1981. Those decades built colonials with attached garages, rear wings and bump-outs, and every added roof line adds a valley or an inside corner.

Run the numbers on one. A colonial with a 48 by 28 foot main block has two roof planes of roughly 48 by 17 feet, about 800 square feet each. One inch of rain on one plane is close to 500 gallons, and in a summer thunderstorm it reaches the gutter within minutes. Add a garage roof draining into the same back run and a valley that lands its water on one 10-foot stretch. The 5-inch trough can usually hold that. The 2x3 downspout at the end of a 48-foot run usually cannot, so the gutter fills from the far end and sheets over the lip while it is perfectly clean.

Do seamless gutters in Hudson, Ohio need to be 6-inch?

Not on every run. The front eave of a colonial, with a downspout at each end and no valleys, usually does fine at 5-inch. The runs that earn 6-inch are the back run that collects a garage or wing roof, the short run under a valley, and any run that spills in hard rain while clean. A 6-inch gutter carries roughly 40 percent more water, and a 3x4 downspout moves about twice the water of a 2x3. The two sizes can be mixed on one house.

Run on a Hudson colonialWhat usually worksWhy
Front eave, two downspouts, no valleys5-inch with 2x3 downspoutsOne roof plane drains evenly along the full length
Back run collecting the main roof plus a garage or wing6-inch with 3x4 downspoutsTwo roofs feed one trough
Short run under a roof valley6-inch, or 5-inch with a 3x4 outlet and a splash guardValley water arrives fast and in one spot
Single-story garage eave5-inch with 2x3 downspoutsSmall roof, short run
Any run over about 40 feet with one downspoutAdd a downspout before upsizingOne outlet for 40 feet or more is the usual bottleneck

Corners are the other reason size matters here. On a seamless run the aluminum is one piece between corners, so a colonial with eight to twelve miters has eight to twelve sealed joints and nothing else. The inside corner under a valley takes the most water in summer and holds the most ice from November to March, and it is the first miter to drip. If one corner leaks and the rest of the metal is sound, that is a reseal, covered on our gutter repair page, not a replacement. The symptom list for either call is in repair or replace gutters, and the full size comparison is in 5-inch vs 6-inch gutters.

Can seamless K-style gutters replace the half-round or built-in gutters on a house near the Green?

Sometimes. Guttrz installs K-style only. Half-round gutters hung on brackets from a flat, sound fascia board can usually be replaced with seamless K-style, though the profile changes the look of the roof edge. Built-in gutters, the troughs set into the cornice itself on many Greek Revival and Federal era houses, are not something Guttrz replaces. They are a roofing and carpentry job, and you will hear that at the on-site check, not on install day.

The Hudson Heritage Association's homeowner guidebook notes that many historic homes in Hudson have decorative cornices, some with paired brackets along the eaves, and that most facades in the district are red brick or wood clapboard. That shapes what K-style can do. A hidden hanger needs a flat board to screw into. If the only surface behind the old half-round is a crown molding or the brackets themselves, a K-style gutter would have to cover trim to get a grip, and that is a bad trade. On a plain fascia it works, and the old brackets come off with the old gutter.

Will new seamless gutters match the white or bronze trim on an older Hudson home?

Close, but rarely perfect. Most 1970s to 1990s colonials in Hudson have aluminum-wrapped fascia and soffit in white or a dark brown usually sold as bronze. Gutter coil comes factory painted, so a white or bronze gutter is easy to get. The catch is that 30-year-old trim has faded and chalked, and a new gutter in the same named color can read a shade brighter beside it.

You have two honest choices. Pick the stock color closest to the trim as it looks today, and the difference fades from notice within a season of dust and weather. Or deal with the trim first. Re-wrapping fascia is a separate trim job, not part of a gutter replacement, so if the trim bothers you more than the gutters, finish that board first and hang new gutters on it. Either way, the color for your job is written on the quote, and you can hold samples against your own trim during the 20-minute check.

Does the Hudson Historic District review a gutter replacement?

Ask the city before you pick a date if your house is in the district or is a listed landmark. Hudson's Architectural and Historic Board of Review issues certificates of appropriateness for exterior alterations in the historic district, and Community Development at 1140 Terex Road handles the applications. We are not the authority on what needs review, so we will not tell you gutters are exempt. Check the Architectural and Historic Board of Review page or call the office with your address.

Two things help when you ask. The Hudson Heritage Association guidebook says homeowners, not contractors, are responsible for getting approvals, and it encourages plain gutters in quiet colors on historic homes with downspouts kept off the street-facing front where practical, which a K-style layout can do by running outlets to the sides and back. Lots in the city's Historic Residential Neighborhood zoning district are generally under 30,000 square feet with shallow front setbacks, so a front gutter sits close to the sidewalk in plain view. If the city gives you conditions on profile or color, send them with your address and the written quote follows them.

Where should the downspouts send water on a Hudson lot?

Away from the foundation, which on Hudson's ground takes planning. Hudson sits on high ground at about 1,066 feet, and rain that falls in the city drains in five directions: Brandywine Creek, which rises in northern Hudson at about 1,165 feet, Mud Brook, Tinkers Creek, a western edge that runs straight to the Cuyahoga River, and a southeast corner that drains toward Fish Creek. Most lots have a direction they want to drain, and the outlets should work with it.

The soil works against you. The Tinkers Creek watershed, which covers part of Hudson, sits on a glaciated plateau of silt loam and clayey silt loam, and water sits on that rather than soaking in. A 3x4 downspout delivers twice the water to whatever is at the bottom, so a splash block on clay beside a basement wall is not enough. Plan on extensions that reach past the beds or a tie-in to an existing buried line, and settle the outlet spots during the on-site check. A packed downspout elbow defeats any gutter size, so if the metal is sound and the problem is debris, a gutter cleaning in Hudson at $150 to $300 is the cheaper first step.

What do seamless gutters cost in Hudson, and how do you get a Guttrz price?

Seamless aluminum gutters in Northeast Ohio are commonly quoted at about $8 to $14 per foot for 5-inch and $10 to $18 per foot for 6-inch, with downspouts as a separate line, and a typical 150 to 200 foot house commonly lands around $1,500 to $3,500. Those are market ranges, not Guttrz prices. A Hudson colonial with a garage wing can run past 200 feet with several runs in 6-inch, so the upper end is not unusual here. The line items are explained in seamless gutter cost in Ohio.

Guttrz does not publish a per-foot gutter price. Send your Hudson address with the form on this page or text (330) 818-5584, and you will hear from us within the hour during business hours. Owner Christian Schaffner does the 20-minute on-site check from the Guttrz office at 1196 Doncaster St NW in North Canton, measures each run, counts corners and downspouts, and looks at the roof areas feeding each gutter. Your firm price comes in writing, good for one year, with no in-home sales presentation. Most homes are done in a day, and the old gutters leave with us. If you want Leaf Solution guards on the new gutters the same visit, the math is on the Hudson gutter guard page.

Questions

My Hudson colonial overflows at one back corner in every storm. Do I have to replace all the gutters?

Usually not. If the metal is straight and sound, the fix is capacity at that one spot: a second downspout on the long back run, a 3x4 outlet in place of the 2x3, or a 6-inch seamless run on that side only. If the valley above it overshoots the gutter, the gutter height is part of the problem. The on-site check sorts out which one it is before anything is priced.

Can seamless gutters go on a 1990s Hudson home with aluminum-wrapped fascia?

Yes. The hidden hangers screw through the wrap into the wood fascia behind it. The wrap is checked once the old gutter is off, because it can hide soft wood, especially at the inside corners under valleys where old miters have dripped for years. Rotted fascia is a separate repair that is quoted before work continues.

Does Guttrz replace built-in gutters on historic Hudson homes?

No. Built-in gutters are lined troughs set into the cornice of the roof itself, common on Greek Revival and Federal era houses. Replacing or relining them is roofing and carpentry work, and Guttrz does not do it. Guttrz installs K-style gutters hung from a fascia board. If your house has half-round gutters on brackets, those can often be replaced with K-style, and we will tell you which case you have at the on-site check.

Should I choose white or bronze gutters on an older Hudson colonial?

Match the fascia and soffit you already have, since the gutter sits right against them. White trim gets white gutters; dark brown or bronze trim gets bronze. Downspouts usually follow the siding or trim color they run against. Expect a new gutter to look slightly brighter than 30-year-old trim at first. The color for your job is written on the quote, and you can hold samples against the house during the on-site check.

How long does a gutter replacement take on a large two-story house in Hudson?

Most homes are done in a day, including tear-off, forming the new runs at the curb, hanging them, and installing the downspouts. A big colonial with a dozen corners and a lot of 6-inch footage can take longer, and fascia that turns out to be rotted adds a separate repair that is quoted first. You get a realistic estimate of the day when you get the written price.

Is Hudson inside the Guttrz service area for seamless gutters?

Yes. Guttrz is based at 1196 Doncaster St NW in North Canton and installs within about 45 minutes of there, which includes all of Hudson and the 44236 zip code. Stow, Twinsburg, Aurora, Reminderville and Silver Lake are covered from the same office. Send your address by text or with the form and you will hear back within the hour during business hours.
