LeafFilter cost: is your quote fair, and how do you cancel in Ohio?

How to check a LeafFilter quote per foot, what local installers charge for similar mesh, and how Ohio's three-day cancellation right works.

If you just sat through a long in-home visit and got a LeafFilter quote, you are probably asking two things: is this LeafFilter cost fair, and can I still back out? Below: how to turn any quote into a per-foot price, how national brand pricing compares to a local installer, and how Ohio's three-day cancellation law works if you signed at your kitchen table.

How much does LeafFilter cost per foot?

LeafFilter and similar national brands are commonly quoted at $25 to $40 per foot installed, based on quotes homeowners report and consumer cost guides. For a typical Northeast Ohio home, that often means $5,000 to $8,000. Your own quote can land higher or lower depending on footage, height, and any discount applied that day.

A few things push a national brand quote up or down:

• Linear footage. A long ranch or a colonial with a wraparound porch adds up fast.
• Stories and roof pitch. Two-story and steep roofs take more time and more ladder work.
• Corners and downspouts. Inside and outside corners need extra cutting and sealing.
• Gutter condition. Sagging runs, loose hangers, or rotted fascia may be added to the quote or required before install.
• Promotions. Many in-home quotes start with a list price and then apply percentage discounts, so the number you remember may not match the final contract.

The fairest way to compare is to price the same home the same way. The table below uses the national brand range homeowners commonly report ($25 to $40 per foot) and Guttrz rates: $15 per foot single story, $18 per foot two story or steep pitch, and $20 per corner, with a $1,500 job minimum.

Why is there such a big gap?

Mesh, aluminum frames, and a day of labor cost roughly the same for everyone. National in-home brands also carry costs a small local installer does not: TV and online advertising, sales reps who come to your house, and regional offices. Those costs show up in the per-foot price. That does not make a big brand a bad choice. It just helps to know what you pay for.

How do you compare gutter guard quotes per foot?

Divide the final contract price by the linear feet listed on the quote. That gives you the true per-foot cost, including every discount. Then compare it to other quotes for the same footage and the same story count. If a quote does not list footage, ask for it in writing before you decide anything.

1. Find the footage. It should be on the quote. If not, measure along the eaves from the ground with a tape or measuring wheel.
2. Use the price after discounts. Ignore the list price. Use the number you would actually pay.
3. Divide. Price divided by feet equals price per foot.
4. Adjust for what is included. If one quote includes cleaning, corner sealing, and hanger repair and another does not, the lower number may not be the better deal.
5. Compare like for like. A two-story home should be compared to two-story pricing.

Here is a worked example. Say a one-story home gets a contract for $6,800 covering 170 feet. That is $6,800 divided by 170, or $40 per foot. The same home at Guttrz rates with 4 corners is 170 x $15 + 4 x $20 = $2,630, or about $15.50 per foot all in. Same footage, same type of product, a $4,170 difference.

Is LeafFilter worth it?

LeafFilter can be worth it if you want a large national company behind your gutters and the price is close to other quotes you have. According to LeafFilter's own warranty page, its limited lifetime warranty is transferable to a new owner. If your quote is double what local installers charge for similar mesh, the brand name alone is hard to justify.

It may make sense for you if:

• You value a lifetime transferable warranty and a big service organization more than the price difference.
• Your per-foot price came in near the low end of the range.

It may not make sense if:

• Your gutters are sagging, pitched wrong, or pulling away. Fix those first, no matter who installs guards.
• You felt rushed. A good price will still be a good price next week.

What are the best LeafFilter alternatives?

The main alternatives are a local installer of stainless micro-mesh, a second quote from another brand, DIY guards from a home center, or simply scheduling gutter cleanings. Which one fits depends on your trees, your roof height, and your budget.

Local micro-mesh installer

Same category of product, usually a lower per-foot price, and you often deal with the owner. Ask about the mesh, the frame, how it fastens, and both warranties.

DIY guards

Home center mesh and screens cost far less. The tradeoff is ladder time, fit on corners, and how they hold up to Ohio snow and freeze and thaw.

Regular cleaning

Can you cancel a LeafFilter contract in Ohio?

Usually, yes, if you signed at your home. Ohio's Home Solicitation Sales Act gives you until midnight of the third business day after you sign to cancel in writing, for any reason. It applies to any company that sells to you at your home, national or local, Guttrz included. The rules are in Ohio Revised Code sections 1345.21 to 1345.28.

Who does the Ohio three-day cancellation law cover?

Under Ohio Revised Code 1345.21, a home solicitation sale is a consumer sale where the seller makes a personal sales pitch at your home and you sign there, including when you invited the seller over. It also covers agreements signed somewhere other than the seller's place of business. Sales under $25 are excluded.

There are exceptions. One example: you contacted the seller first and the seller has a permanent location in Ohio where the product is regularly shown for sale. Another: certain emergency repairs where you sign a handwritten waiver. If your deal involves a loan secured by your home, a separate federal rescission right may apply instead. Read the cancellation notice attached to your contract. If one is there, follow it.

What counts as a business day in Ohio?

Ohio law counts every calendar day except Sunday and these holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Saturdays count.

Example: you sign on a Thursday evening. Friday is day one, Saturday is day two, Sunday does not count, and Monday is day three. Your deadline is midnight Monday. If that Monday is Columbus Day, it moves to midnight Tuesday.

What must the seller give you when you sign?

Under Ohio Revised Code 1345.23, the seller must leave you a signed copy of the contract with the seller's name and address and the date you signed. A bold statement of your right to cancel must appear near your signature. Two copies of a form titled "Notice of Cancellation" must be attached, filled in with the seller's contact details and your deadline date. The three-day clock starts when the seller meets these requirements.

How fast do you get your money back?

The seller must refund all payments, return any note or loan paperwork you signed, and cancel any security interest within ten business days after receiving your notice. Under Ohio Revised Code 1345.22, a seller that provides services cannot start the work during your cancellation window.

How to cancel LeafFilter within three business days

Put your cancellation in writing and send it before midnight of the third business day. A phone call alone is not written notice. These steps follow the method Ohio law describes and work for any home solicitation contract.

1. Find your contract and the Notice of Cancellation form. Look for the date you signed, the deadline date, and the seller's mailing address, email, or fax number.
2. Count your business days. Skip Sundays and the listed holidays. Compare your count to the deadline date written on the form, and send your notice well before the earlier of the two.
3. Write your notice. The easiest way is to sign and date one copy of the attached form. A short letter also works. Ohio law says the notice needs no special form, as long as it shows you do not want to be bound. Include your name as it appears on the contract, the job address, the date you signed, any contract or job number, and one plain sentence: "I hereby cancel this transaction." Sign and date it.
4. Send it to the contact listed in the agreement. Ohio allows certified mail with return receipt requested (effective on the postmark date), hand delivery (effective when delivered), fax (effective when sent and you get a confirmation), or email (effective when sent). Many people email a scan and also mail a certified copy the same day.
5. Keep proof. Save a photo of the signed notice, the certified mail receipt, the sent email, or the fax confirmation.
6. Handle any financing. If you signed a loan application or credit agreement during the visit, say so in your notice and contact the lender in writing as well.
7. Do not let work start. If a crew is scheduled inside your cancellation window, you can decline.
8. Watch for your refund. Any deposit should come back within ten business days after the seller receives your notice. If it does not, you can file a complaint with the Ohio Attorney General or call (800) 282-0515. Under Ohio Revised Code 1345.28, not following these rules is a deceptive practice.

What should you ask before signing any gutter guard contract?

Ask for the footage, the final per-foot price, what is included, and both warranties in writing. Then ask whether the price holds if you wait. Use this checklist with every quote, including ours.

• How many linear feet, and how did you measure?
• How many corners and downspouts are included?
• What is the final price after every discount, and what is that per foot?
• How long is this price good? A week, a month, a year?
• What are the mesh and frame made of?
• How does it attach? Does anything get screwed through my shingles or lift them?
• Are cleaning, corner sealing, and hanger or fascia repairs included?
• What does the material warranty cover, and who pays for labor on a claim?
• Is there a separate workmanship warranty, and how long is it?
• Who does the install: your employees or a subcontractor? Can I see proof of insurance?
• Is the cash price the same as the financed price?
• Where is my Notice of Cancellation, and is the deadline date filled in?
• When will work start? It should not start before my three business days end.
