For a yard with maples, pines, or oaks near the roof, fascia-mounted stainless micro-mesh is the best type of gutter guard because it is the only one that blocks helicopter seeds, needles, and shingle grit at once. For a treeless lot or a short single-story run you can reach from a step ladder, a cheaper screen may do. Foam and brush inserts are a short-term fix.

How do foam gutter guard inserts work, and where do they fail?

A foam insert is a wedge of porous foam cut to fit inside the gutter. Rain soaks through while leaves sit on top. It costs about $2 to $4 per foot at retail, needs no tools, and is the easiest guard to install. It is also the first to fail.

In Northeast Ohio, foam has three problems. Silver and red maple seeds land on it in May, get wet, and root in the foam. By July you can have a hedge in the gutter. Shingle grit washes into the pores until the foam is a sponge full of sand that will not drain. In winter the soaked foam freezes solid, so melt water goes over the front edge. Plan on replacing it every 2 to 5 years.

Under shingles: no. Best use: a short, low run you can reach from a step ladder, with big leaves and no maples or pines nearby.

Are brush gutter guards any good?

A brush guard is a long bottle brush with a steel core and stiff bristles that stand up out of the gutter. Leaves rest on the bristle tips and dry out, and water runs through below. Retail cost is about $2 to $4 per foot. Brush drains better than foam, since there is no solid block to freeze, and it is easy to pull out and shake off.

The problem is anything smaller than an oak leaf. Pine needles slide between the bristles and stay. Maple seed wings hook on the bristles and pile into a mat that holds water once it is wet. Foam vs mesh gutter guards is an easy call. Brush vs foam is closer: brush drains better and lasts longer, roughly 3 to 10 years before the bristles flatten or the core rusts, but under trees it needs pulling and cleaning once or twice a year, close to the work of cleaning an open gutter.

Under shingles: no. Best use: large-leaf trees only, no conifers.

Plastic gutter guards vs metal: do snap-in screens hold up?

Plastic and vinyl snap-in screens are perforated sheets that bend to snap under the front lip of the gutter, often with the back edge tucked under the first row of shingles. They cost $1 to $3 per foot at retail, the cheapest guard in the store. Plastic gutter guards vs metal is mostly a question of how many winters you want them to survive.

The holes are a few millimeters wide, so pine needles drop straight through and maple seeds pass through or wedge with the wing sticking up. Shingle grit settles in the gutter like sand. Cold is the bigger enemy. Vinyl gets brittle in January and cracks when snow slides off the roof onto it. Summer sun warps it so sections bow up and blow out in wind. Perforated aluminum screens are a step up: they do not crack or warp, and they can be screwed to the gutter lip instead of relying on snap tension. They still let needles and seeds through.

Under shingles: often, which matters below. Lifespan: 3 to 10 years for plastic, 10 to 20 for aluminum screen. Best use: a stopgap on a small home with only large-leaf trees.

Micro mesh vs reverse curve: which handles heavy rain and small debris?

Micro-mesh and reverse curve are the two premium types, usually installed by a contractor. Micro-mesh filters everything larger than fine sand through a stainless screen. Reverse curve covers the gutter and relies on water clinging to a rounded edge. Micro-mesh wins on small debris and heavy rain. Reverse curve wins on shedding large leaves with nothing left on top.

Reverse curve (surface tension) helmets

A reverse curve guard is a solid aluminum or steel hood that covers the gutter and curls down at the front. Rain follows the curve around the nose and drops through a narrow slot. Leaves cannot follow the curve, so they slide off. Installed quotes commonly run $20 to $40 per foot, and the hoods often last 15 to 20 years or more because there is no mesh to clog. Some designs slide under the first row of shingles.

Where it fails here: in a summer downpour off a steep roof, water moves too fast to wrap around the nose and shoots past the gutter onto your walkway or foundation. Maple seed wings, pine needles, and shingle grit ride the water film into the slot and into the gutter, where you cannot see them. In winter the nose ices first, so icicles form along the front edge. Cleaning the slot means a ladder and sometimes removing sections, so helmets can be harder to maintain than the open gutter they replaced.

Stainless steel micro-mesh, fascia mounted

Micro-mesh is a fine stainless steel screen over a rigid aluminum frame. The frame clips onto the front lip of the gutter and fastens at the roof edge, so nothing goes under or through the shingles. The openings are a fraction of a millimeter, small enough to stop needles, seed wings, and most shingle grit.

Where micro-mesh also falls short

Micro-mesh has three real limits.

  • Overshoot at valleys on very steep roofs. Where two steep slopes meet, water can hit the gutter fast enough to skip across even fine mesh in a hard rain. A small splash diverter usually solves it, but it is a spot to watch.
  • It needs an occasional rinse. Pollen, maple flowers, and fine grit dry into a film on the mesh. Under heavy trees, plan a hose rinse from a ladder every few years and a look from the ground each spring and fall. Our gutter guard maintenance schedule lays this out season by season.
  • Cost. It is a one-time $2,100 to $3,300 for a typical home. If no tree reaches your roof and you clean once a year yourself, that money may never pay back.

Snow and ice sit on mesh as on any guard. That does not cause ice dams, which come from attic heat, as our post on gutter guards and ice dams explains.

Do gutter guards go under the shingles, and why does that matter?

Some do. Many plastic screens and most reverse-curve helmets tuck under or fasten through the first row of shingles. Fascia-mounted micro-mesh attaches to the gutter lip and the roof edge instead. This matters because shingle warranties cover defects in the shingles, not damage from something installed on top of them.

Lifting the first course of shingles breaks the seal strip that holds them down in wind. Screwing through them puts a hole right above the gutter, where water collects. GAF, one of the largest shingle makers, publishes a bulletin advising against covers that need fasteners through the shingles, removal of the drip edge, or anything under the underlayment. If it does, call your roofer first.

What do the five types cost on a 150-foot single-story home?

Same house, 150 feet of gutter with 4 corners, at each price range. Retail numbers are materials only, plus your own time on the ladder.

  • Foam: 150 x $2 to $4 = $300 to $600, replaced roughly every 2 to 5 years. Three replacements in 10 years is $900 to $1,800.
  • Brush: 150 x $2 to $4 = $300 to $600, plus pulling and cleaning once or twice a year.
  • Plastic screen: 150 x $1 to $3 = $150 to $450, with cracked or blown-out sections replaced as they go.
  • Reverse curve: at the $20 to $40 per foot commonly quoted, $3,000 to $6,000.
  • National-brand micro-mesh: at the $25 to $40 per foot commonly quoted, $3,750 to $6,000.

How do you pick the best type of gutter guard for your house?

Match the guard to your worst tree, your roof, and how long you plan to stay. Answer five questions.

  1. What is within reach of the roof? Pines or maples mean fine mesh. Only oaks and other big-leaf trees mean a screen may do. Nothing taller than the roof means you may not need guards at all.
  2. How steep is the roof, and are there valleys? Steep roofs and valleys push water fast. Avoid reverse curve there, and ask any micro-mesh installer about diverters at the valleys.
  3. How new is the roof? A new roof under an upgraded warranty is the last place to slide a guard under shingles.

  5. How long will you own the house? Foam pays for itself in one season and dies in a few. Micro-mesh takes about 4 to 9 years to beat two cleanings a year, then keeps paying.

What is the cheapest type of gutter guard?

Foam and plastic often need replacing within 2 to 10 years, so a $150 to $450 screen job can repeat several times before a metal guard would need any attention.

Can you put micro-mesh gutter guards on 6-inch gutters?

Do plastic gutter guards crack in the winter?

Often, yes. Vinyl and cheap plastic get brittle below freezing, and a slab of snow sliding off the roof or a chunk of ice can split a section. They also warp in summer sun, so a section that survives one winter may bow and blow out by the next. Aluminum and stainless steel guards do not have this problem.

Can you mix gutter guard types on one house?

You can, and some people put micro-mesh on the runs under pines and cheaper screens elsewhere. The catch is two maintenance schedules and two sets of parts, and the cheap sections still fail on their own timeline. Most homes are simpler with one type on every run, sized to the worst tree in the yard.

Do foam gutter guards grow mold or sprout seeds?

Yes. Wet foam in a shaded gutter is a seed bed, and maple helicopters that land on it in spring sprout within weeks. Moss and mold grow in the pores over a season or two. Pulling the foam out to dry and rinse it helps, but once the pores are full of grit and roots it needs replacing.

What is the difference between micro-mesh and a perforated aluminum screen?

Hole size. A perforated aluminum screen has punched holes a few millimeters across, big enough for pine needles, maple seed wings, and shingle grit to pass through. Micro-mesh is a woven stainless screen with openings a fraction of a millimeter wide, so only water and very fine dust get through. Both are metal and both last well outdoors, but only micro-mesh keeps small debris out.
